Celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation (Pittsburgh, PA)

A celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, begun by Martin Luther in 1517, will be held at Mount Lebanon Lutheran Church, 975 Washington Road, Pittsburgh, PA, 15228, on Sunday, October 29, at 9:30 AM. The pastors and members of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Brookline and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Scott will participate. A joint choir and musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will accompany Larry Allen, Mount Lebanon’s organist and music director. A grand processional will begin the liturgy, including the clergy, choir, and catechism students.

The preacher for this liturgy will be renowned biblical scholar, The Rev. Dr. Christopher Seitz. Rev. Seitz received his AB from the University of North Carolina, an MTS from Virginia Theological Seminary, studied at the University of Munich, 1979–80, and received several degrees from Yale University: STM 1981; MA 1982; MPhil 1983; PhD 1986.

He began his teaching career at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, later becoming a professor of Old Testament at Yale. He was at Yale for ten years and then received a chair at the University of St Andrews (Scotland) where he was professor of Old Testament and theological studies. He is presently senior research professor of Biblical interpretation at Wycliffe College in the University of Toronto. Professor Seitz is the author and editor of more than sixteen books; he is best known for his volume on Isaiah 1—39 in Interpretation Commentary Series, held in 727 libraries and translated into Korean, Japanese and Italian. An ordained Episcopal priest, Rev. Seitz has served parishes in Texas, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Germany, France and Scotland. He was canon theologian in the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas until 2015. He presently lives with his wife Elizabeth in Courances, France.
